A young man asked me the other day, “How do I set goals for the New Year that pleased God?” As I thought about that question over the last several days, I have wondered how many others have the same question about goal setting and how to do it according to God’s will. I hope the following remarks help you settle any question you have of setting God-centered goals and how to accomplish them. But before I go there, allow me to share a brief but foundational thought on the practice of goal setting and its place in the Scriptures.

Why have so many people, this Christmas Season, felt like it’s an imposition to go to Church on Christmas Day? How ironic to think of worshiping Jesus as an interruption to His birthday celebration!

“Glory to God in the Highest” is a phrase the Angels sang to announce the birth of Jesus Christ to the lowly Shepherds just outside of Bethlehem. It literally means, “Praise and honor to God who reigns on High in Heaven”. Imagine being one of the Shepherds who saw the Angels and heard their praise that night. Imagine being the first ones other than Mary and Joseph to see the promised Messiah. That night changed everything for them.

"Sow for yourselves righteousness; Reap in mercy; Break up your fallow ground, For it is time to seek the LORD, till He comes and rains righteousness on you." (Hosea 10:12)
"Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." (Galatians 6:7-9)

Seasons in the Kingdom of God or the "spiritual realm" are not the same as the four seasons we experience in the "natural realm". We do not sow only in the "spiritual" springtime and reap in autumn. As followers of Jesus Christ, we must commit to this truth written by the Apostle Paul to his young protégé Timothy: "I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready ‘in season’ and ‘out of season’. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching." 2 Timothy 4:1-2

There are at least seven basic biblical principles of sowing and reaping we must come to understand if we are going to enjoy "God’s harvest", or the blessed results of our scriptural action or behavior. Farmers expect to have a bumper crop when they have sown the right seed, in the right soil, and have the right mixture of rain and sun. The question is can God’s people expect certain supernatural results from God when they learn the biblical principles of sowing and reaping? The answer is, yes!

Have you heard this inspiring quote? "We sow our thoughts, and we reap our actions; we sow our actions, and we reap our habits; we sow our habits, and we reap our character; we sow our character, and we reap our destiny." Take a "Selah" moment and meditate on that one.

And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with
His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, "Are You for us or for our adversaries?"
~ Joshua 5:13 NKJV

Standing at the tomb of Lazarus, who had been dead for four days, Jesus makes the boldest statement in Human history. He said, "I AM the resurrection and the life." Then, to make it clear that He is who He says He is, He proceeds to demonstrate it! Can you image the hush that swept across the small crowd gathered at the tomb when Jesus said, "Take away the stone."? He had their attention, didn't He? However, I think what was even more important to Jesus was He had Martha's attention.

"Then Jesus said to them again, "Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door for the sheep. All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep." (John 10:7-9) In this passage, the Shepherd refers to one who had charge over the combined flocks belonging to several families in a village. The shepherd would come to the gate of a home each day for the purpose of taking the sheep out to pasture along with other sheep. Upon hearing the familiar call of the shepherd, the one inside the home who would tend the gate would open the gate. Each such shepherd would have a distinctive call that would signal the sheep of his arrival. The sheep would not come together to go with someone with an unfamiliar voice. They had been trained to only recognize the voice of their shepherd and no one else. This is exactly the point that Jesus is making in these verses. Those who are His sheep respond to Him, and not to the call of thieves and robbers.

Just recently I read a touching story about a humble, consecrated pastor whose young son had become very ill. After the boy had undergone an exhaustive series of tests, the father was told the shocking news that his son had a terminal illness. The youngster had accepted Christ as his Savior, so the minister knew that unless God did a miracle his son would soon be ushered into Glory. In his brokenness the pastor wondered how to inform one in the bloom of youth that he soon would die. After earnestly seeking the direction of the Holy Spirit, he went with a heavy heart through the hospital ward to his son's bedside. First he read a passage of Scripture and had a time of prayer with his dear child. Then he gently told him that the doctors could promise him only a few more days to live. "Are you afraid to meet Jesus, my boy?" asked his devout father. Blinking away a few tears, the little fellow said bravely, "No, not if He's like you, Dad!"

In today's world of iPads, internet, 24 hour news services and Facebook there is one thing that drives the age in which we live - information. Seemingly everyone has a need and desire to know everything about anyone and anything at a moment's notice. Need to know how to fix your car? There's an app for that. Wondering how many waterfalls are in Yosemite National Park? Wikipedia lists 21. Want to find out what President Obama ate for dinner last Tuesday? Try whitehouse.gov. In a world that increasingly demands proof and scientific evidence for even the most trivial of life's questions, how can we as Christians try to convince anyone that they are in desperate need of a God that they cannot see, measure or touch? Simply put, we can't.

There can be no doubt as to whom Jesus is, and whom He claimed to be when we read through the Gospel of John. In it we discover what I call "The Seven 'I AM' Statements of Jesus". These revealing declarations not only explain who He is, but proclaim His mission to save all of us.

"True Identity" We discovered last week, in the story of the prodigal son that our "True Identity" is with the Father in the Father's house. This week I want to share with you that our "True Identity" includes a "True Destiny" to fulfill the work of God in our generation.

"When God Removed My Mask - A True Testimony" There is a story in the Gospel of Luke that parallels a very important part of my life. It's the story Jesus told about two sons of a very rich man. We call it the "Parable of the Prodigal Son." This Easter Sunday, I am going to share my testimony of how, at nineteen years old, I ran away from God and His calling, just like the Prodigal Son did, and how two years later God restored me and helped me discover my "True Identity", a child of God. Below, you can read the story of the "Prodigal Son" again. Then, I want you to invite and bring someone to Easter Sunday Worship Service who needs to hear how God doesn't give up on us, even when we have strayed so far from Him.

Palm Sunday. It is the day that we celebrate Jesus' entry into Jerusalem almost 2,000 years ago. It is a day full of praise and celebration, a grand parade for a humble King. As Jesus rode toward the city, Matthew 21:8 tells us that "a very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road." The crowds were shouting "Hosanna in the highest" and "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord," and yet, in the midst of this seemingly exuberant praise, Luke tells us that Jesus wept. A few hours later, after a confrontation in the Temple with the local money changers, Jesus encounters another crowd; a group of children singing the same songs that the crowds had sung earlier in the day. Yet this time, Jesus commended the children for their songs and declared it to be ordained praise.
